Markers! I've been trying to learn how to use them.

First, a quick self-portrait I did to commemorate my 20th birthday! L-LOOKIN' GOOD .__.;; The lights in this room heat it up really quickly so I am usually in varying states of undress when working. Also I just prefer not wearing clothes to wearing clothes, screw clothes, I don't have time for that shit.

...

The hat I got to wear with my plague doctor mask/Anime North costume--it's like wearing a small black hole on your head! Good for keeping the sun out of your eyes, though.

Then I learned that it is VERY VERY IMPORTANT to use the right kind of paper with markers or else everything will go heart-breakingly wrong.

This I did on paper that was thick and soft and fibrous and it ruined two of my markers and turned out blotchy and horrible. Experienced XTREME!! frustration trying to make the sky not be all streaky (as you can see I did no succeed).

OH AND DID SOMEONE SAY "DIMENSION HOPPING DEMON LADIES"?? No? Oh well.

Clearly the best way to acquaint oneself with a new medium is with FIVE ZILLION LEAVES, yeah?

...

Outfit for Anime North (and whereever else I feel like going dressed as an anachronistic-magpie-nightmare) involves wings that will hopefully look and function rather like this (but more magpie-ish), so I've been making feathers and... making more feathers. SO MANY FEATHERS. I must keep telling myself it is worth it, haha.

Some of the iridescent secondary feathers:

aaand I need to get my ass back into gear and PAINT MORE FEATHERS. You guys it is not a very stimulating or fulfulling task. WINGS WILL BE AWESOME, WINGS WILL BE AWESOME, KEEP TELLING MYSELF THIS....

EDIT: OH ALSO, not that I haven't mentioned this before, but this is my tumblr, I post a lot of nonsense.

WHOA HEY LIVEJOURNAL. I've been doing some things. Pictures!

We've nearly completely redone my little art kitchen--new paint, new floor, new contraptions screwed into the walls. Here's what the wallpaper looked like before:

And here's what the walls look like now:

PRETTY CLASSY HUH. Stripes make everything cooler.

And I have a nice system now for storing all of my colourful paper--

It's becoming a very nice room. I have a lot of mixed feelings though, because on one hand it's like YAY A PRETTY ART ROOM I CAN GET LOTS OF WORK DONE but on the other hand it's like OH GOD I AM GOING TO BE STUCK HERE FOREVER I WILL NEVER MEET ANOTHER PERSON OR HAVE FRIENDS AGAIN SEND HELP IMMEDIATELY.

...

On a related note, I still can't decide if I want to go to Anime North this year. I'm not sure if I can expend the money/energy. I wish I could just...teleport there? No, I wish I had a hotel room to stay in like the good ol' days. It's a lot more fun when you can to and fro from a room and treat it like a mini vacation, haha.

Anyway what was I saying? Oh yeah I've done things. I'VE DONE MY HAIR. With indigo! It was the messiest thing ever, much worse than henna, and most of my belongings are stained with blue and green. Also stained with blue and green: most of my skin. It...it's washing off. Slowly.

Hair colour before and after:

As you can see, it's super effective!

Poorly lit phone photo before and after:

Please note that the indigo DYED MY EYEBROWS. This was not intentional, it just happened as the dye was rinsing out of my hair. Also: the rest of my body hair. ALSO THE REST OF MY BODY. Guys I don't recommend doing this if you have a social life in which temporarily looking like a fresh-water mermaid is unacceptable. The eyebrows are kind of nice though? I mean, they look twice as big now and I may have to apply the tweezers, but they match the hair? :'D

So, yes, I may now acquire some magic bells and leave home to fight the walking dead.

...

It occurs to me that I never posted these Doctor Who split pin people here, so

My mom made them the TARDIS. I tried to make a TARDIS but it was not square and my mom did not approve of the inaccuracy.

I recently got a bunch of Copic markers which were hella expensive but definitely worth it. The downside is that I'm allergic to them and can only use them with a surgical mask or dust mask on. Because life would be too easy otherwise.

...

The wind is howling so strongly that I fear for my safety. What happened, weather? Yesterday the grass was green and the windows were open, now we are covered in snow again. ):

oh hey ladies, what're you up to there? oh, you're opening a portal to another dimension in the pages of my notebooks? well that's cool I guess I'll just uh... leave you to that then.

the slightly surreal picture I made for Ad as a Christmas present. PS, THESE CATS ARE THE CUTEST CATS:

Also, my grandmother sent me wireless headphones for Christmas so now I can wander the entire house without repeatedly dropping my iPhone/getting tangled in headphone wires. My quality of life has significantly improved.

me + you

tiny silhouette people are the most fun. it's nice to make things that look like things without having to draw in every detail, haha.

In the dim light early Wednesday morning takes place a duel of honour! Beautiful Lady Catherine's fiancé Lord Harold has challenged beautiful Lady Catherine's lover, the notorious non-traditional-gender-role-conforming lesbian Charlotte Thynne to a fight to the death! Clutching her handkerchief, Lady Catherine looks on in what appears to be horror and fear for her beloveds, comforted by her closest friend, Lord Harold's elegant sister Euphemia. However, unbeknownst to Lady Catherine, Euphemia has had a hand in the morning's spectacle--harbouring a secret love for her friend, it is she who told her brother of Charlotte's involvement with Lady Catherine and provoked him to the challenge, in hopes of eliminating her competition and knowing Lady Catherine will surely turn to her for support in her grief. But what is that look behind the picturesque dew of tears in Lady Catherine's eyes? Could it be...a glint of excitement? A sparkle of delight? A hint of derision? Fools! she thinks, as she feigns a swoon into Euphemia's arms. Who are they to claim to fight for me? As if I were a prize to be won and not an adult capable of making my own decisions? Listening to the clash of the blades she poisoned herself she knows that soon, free of both their stifling attentions, she will leave this place forever and live finally as an independent woman.

...

so I got some of these metal paper fasteners today with the intent of using them for poseable paper dolls, and instead I sat down at the kitchen table and did this.

I do have a compulsion to make everything into people. it is almost certain that, were I to find myself trapped in a room with a cabinet full of canned goods, I would immediately become the mayor of Can Town.

I have come with my mustard seed
--I cannot accept that she will be taken from me.

...

as usual, I frustrate myself by making things that can't fit in my scanner.
doctorconquest: (birds - okay man whatever)

here is something I started a long time ago; it was meant to be a quick and easy thing to get me back into acrylic painting but it ended up taking SO LONG because I kept putting it aside for weeks or months to do other things. MY ATTENTION SPAN, IT IS NOT THE GREATEST. anyway, I recently ruined my main reference photo by spilling a glass of water on it (clever!!) so now I can never finish this properly, but you know what, you know what, I think the point comes across alright as it is and I want to just move on now to something actually interesting and relevant.

seriously, this was ages ago, my hair is like twice that length now.

I just remembered that my copy of The Asylum For Wayward Victorian Girls will be getting here soon! HOORAY FOR A SUPER UPSETTING BOOK.
doctorconquest: (tori - drizzle to the rain)

there she goes.

little illustration of Father Lucifer. I have a small pile of them. as usual, I don't notice how crooked things are until I scan them. FUCK STRAIGHT LINES WHY DO I EVEN TRYYYYY.

saran wrap is not the most fun thing in the world.

hello LJ, I have not completely forgotten you.

went to a textile museum with [profile] flumpitt a few days ago (WE ARE EXCITING PEOPLE WE DO EXCITING THINGS) and there was no one else around so we got goofy pictures.

at a loom!

giant naked fabric man!

and another!

note that halfway through this outing I realised my tight belt was causing acid reflux (fact: in my body, everything causes acid reflux, even thinking too hard about acid reflux), but when loosened the skirt was trying its best to escape from my body for the rest of the day. CAN'T WIN.

terrifying stuffed horse!

"I must say I enjoyed the horse": best guestbook comment ever.
doctorconquest: (art - seated woman with the parasol)

things are getting kind of gross.
doctorconquest: (birds - lmao)

just wanted to test out my new scanner. GUYS IT IS A REALLY NICE SCANNER. it does things I did not know a scanner could do. ;3;

also: re-henna'd my whole head because I cannot face a haircut with roots everywhere (hair stylists are so judgmental I am terrified of them) so now I am DOUBLE RED, and also, every time I eat chocolate lately I get stomach cramps. I can't figure out why though, there's nothing in chocolate that should be bothering me. :|a

DAY NINE: a song by your favourite artist

Imogen Heap wins as my favourite by being so unbelievably fun and friendly and always interacting with her fans as much as possible. also she doesn't seem to think that performing in Canada is "hard to justify financially". :P she needs to come back to Toronto sometime though, ffffff.

anyway so here is a song about the moment your life as you know it crumbles around you.

...

check out A Matter of Taste by Fulvio Bonavia (also Scent of Flower which is a similar concept)

I want it, and also I want to eat it.

EDIT: I love the internet
doctorconquest: (mononoke - stopped me in my tracks)
sprained one of my big toes, it's a really annoying little injury as it's such a small part of my body that I don't even notice it if I'm not trying to move, but it renders me unable to walk. and I was going to see another waterfall tomorrow, too...! I blame the absurdly uneven floors in this house. anyway.

I'm excited to get my hands on the House of Five Leaves soundtrack when it comes out (assuming there will be one); it's an interesting mix of traditional Japanese music and synthesiser and electric guitar. one of the themes though reminds me so much of some of the music from Cat Soup that sometimes I half expect to see a giant man in a mouse costume come running up.

speaking of Cat Soup,

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE TATAMI GALAXY

so from the reviews and reactions I had read, all of which focused on how abstract and surreal and difficult this show was, what I was basically expecting was Cat Soup with bitter philosophical narration. instead what I got was an absolutely endearing and clever take on the Faust legend (which, if you've ever spent time in the same room as me, you will probably know is my FAVOURITE) in which a college student, after realising he lacks all social skills necessary to maintain relationships, devotes himself with his demonic friend to destroying the relationships of others, until a matchmaking god tells him he has a chance with a certain woman and he endeavours to turn his life around. I have no idea what the rest of the episodes will be like, it doesn't seem the narrative is going to progress in a linear fashion, but if they're half as enjoyable as the first this will be one of new favourite series.

some of my immediate attachment to the characters comes from my general love of anything Faust related--the narrator and his friend are so much like the Faust and Mephistopheles that reside in my mind that I actually felt a little violated watching this. and the female lead/sort-of love interest, a very no-nonsense engineering student, was so awesome I didn't even have to stop and think, "wouldn't this be great if it was about a woman instead?"

also, and I feel like as an artist I should comment on this in greater length but I'm getting tired and confused, the art and character designs are really, really, really pretty.
doctorconquest: (loveless - soubi; human beings or...)

this music video... it frightens me a little. (cutout animation is my favourite though. ♥)
doctorconquest: (art - in the doorway)

normally when I make a self-portrait it's of something with a lot of meaning to me. this one, on the other hand, was born from the sudden realisation that I needed a deviantART i.d. picture and the desire to get rid of the hair I had kept from my last cut before a cat got into it. I am a hack and a fraud. also: impressed with how quickly I can get things done when I actually work on them consistently. :|a

1. life is stressful. relaxing music is good for your health. try this:

2. Kim McCarty is really good:

3. a picture of a fat grey cat because there hasn't been one in a while:

BONUS LIFE UPDATE: I have bangs and an iMac and a cold. mostly the new computer makes up for the discomfort of the other two, though.
doctorconquest: (loveless - soubi; butterflies instead)

don't even bother, Soubi, that butterfly symbolism is never going to leave you alone.
